Laws
Before the passing of his Mother and mentors Nero’s political ruling was one admired and appreciated by many. He was believed to have exercised fair ruling and justice. (Channel, 2014)
Nero had:
- Cut down on personal jurisdiction
- Ended the habit of having the political cases of powerful men behind close doors and involved the senate
- Dedicated more money and power to the military
- Repealed many of the hate measures set up my Claudius
After the passing of mentors and mother Nero became unruly and uncontrollable, taking advantage of the money and power he had at his reach, slowly descending into a greedy lifestyle (Channel, 2014). His downward spiral began with sentencing his wife to death only to marry his slave mistress by the name of Claudia Acte. His love for his new wife could be the motivation for Nero to create laws protecting slaves and their well being (Museums, Capitoline, 2012). After being accused of treason Nero’s relationship with the senate took a toll and slowly began to deteriorate. Instead of working through the issues Nero reacted with harsh actions resulting in the murder of senate members and the forced suicides of many other close to him (Channel, 2014). In order to win his people back Nero threw a public banquet for the city, feeding hundreds on the money he did not have to spend. This lead to even more money trouble with the army incurring large military expenses which lasted till 63 AD (Barrett, 2008).More issues arose within the city of Rome after The Great Fire as financial woes fell throughout as many people were without jobs and homes. The financial woes were not helped by Nero’s constant extravagant spending on the lavish arts. Nero’s took to the issues by having put six landowners to death who owned a half of the land provinces between them in order to be able to resell the land (Barrett, 2008). Not only did he murder for money but he sold positions in the public office, increased taxes in turn putting a massive strain on the poor and homeless and took money from the holy temples (Channel, 2014). Polices allowing officers to confiscate properties were even reinstituted in order to gain back his money.
